Vehicle Profile: 2014 Chevrolet Cruze

Small size, big value

The Chevrolet Cruze, on sale here at Jack Maxton Chevrolet in Worthington, Ohio, delivers that perfect mix of individuality, performance and equipment, which is one reason it is Chevy’s best-selling passenger car around the world. With a deep selection of powertrains, striking design and premium features, the five-passenger Chevy Cruze is the perfect automotive companion. Now, an all-new clean turbo-diesel engine choice gives the 2014 Cruze unmatched fuel economy, as well.

The biggest news for the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze (MSRP $17,520) is the Cruze Turbo Diesel model (MSRP $24,985) and its new 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine. Chevrolet harnessed extensive diesel expertise, here and in Europe, in developing this four-cylinder, which is the cleanest diesel that General Motors has ever put into production. With 151 hp and a stout 264 lb/ft of torque, the Cruze Diesel is fun to drive, and thanks to its inherently efficient diesel engine, it returns an EPA-estimated 46 mpg highway. When it becomes available this summer, the Cruze will be the most fuel efficient non-hybrid gasoline or diesel car sold in America.

The automotive press was quick to recognize the virtues of the Cruze. U.S. News ranked it ahead of 36 other vehicles––including the Honda Civic and Civic Hybrid, Kia Forte and Rio, Subaru Impreza, Dodge Dart, Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta Hybrid, Toyota Corolla, MINI Cooper and many others––in the “Affordable Compact Car” category. Kelley Blue Book reviewers said, “The Cruze stands out from other compacts with its comfort-oriented ride and overall feeling of solidity and strength,” while the Edmunds review said, “It’s hard not to take a shine to the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. Big-torque performance and hybrid-baiting efficiency is an alluring combination, while the Cruze’s intrinsic goodness continues to impress three years after its launch.”

The Cruze also offers two Ecotec® gasoline engines. The first is a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder with Variable Valve Timing that delivers 138 hp, 125 lb/ft of torque and an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway. The second is a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder. It produces 138 hp, 148 lb/ft of torque and even better fuel economy, EPA-estimated at 26 mpg city, 38 mpg highway.

In addition to the Cruze Turbo Diesel, the 2014 Cruze lineup includes LS, 1LT, Eco, 2LT and LTZ trims.

The LS comes with the 1.8-liter engine and either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with ActiveSelect manual control. Some of the great standard equipment on the LS includes Bluetooth® wireless connectivity, CD/MP3 audio, a tilting/telescoping steering wheel with audio and phone controls, a USB port and auxiliary input jack, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, OnStar, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, 10 standard air bags and an Enhanced Acoustic Package that employs more than 30 separate noise-abating treatments to the vehicle to keep noise out of the cabin.

Both the 1LT and 2LT are powered by the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, and both offer a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic with ActiveSelect. Highlights of 1LT standard equipment include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 16-inch alloy wheels and cruise control. Choosing the 2LT will snag you 17-inch wheels, heated leather seats and a sport-tuned suspension.

The LTZ is the most luxurious version of the gasoline-powered Cruze trims. It features 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior accents, automatic climate control and foglamps all as standard equipment. It also comes standard with the Chevrolet MyLink stereo with seven-inch touch-screen, rear-vision camera display and voice recognition; keyless access with push-button start; and a remote vehicle start system.

The Cruze Eco combines the best convenience and luxury features from the other trims and adds a collection of fuel saving technologies. It comes with the same 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and available six-speed automatic transmission as the LT and LTZ trims, but its standard six-speed manual transmission is Eco-specific, featuring gearing designed to maximize fuel economy. The lightweight, 17-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in low-rolling-resistance rubber, and the Eco front fascia includes a lower air shutter to improve aerodynamics at highway speed. The result of these and other Eco-specific features is an EPA-estimated 26 mpg city, 39 mpg highway with the six-speed automatic and 28 mpg city, 42 mpg highway with the manual.

Regardless of your choice of Cruze trim, you can rest easy knowing that you and your passengers are protected by the car with the most standard safety features in its class. On top of the 10 airbags, the Cruze provides standard StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System and four-wheel antilock brakes. Additional driver assistance and safety systems that are standard or available, depending on trim, include Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Park Assist and a Rear Vision Camera. Plus, the Chevrolet Cruze is the only car to include the OnStar suite of safety and convenience features.

Your new 2014 Chevy Cruze is designed to protect you, and Chevrolet is committed to protecting your Cruze. Every new Cruze comes with a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and two years of free scheduled maintenance.

Car Care: Springtime Check Up

Shake off the dust and rust and get ready for nicer weather

With winter nearly over and warmer weather on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about getting your automobile back into shape. Cold weather and poor road conditions wreak havoc on your vehicle, both inside and out, so here are some helpful suggestions to get your ride ready for spring.

A thorough exterior and interior cleaning is first on the to-do list. Outside, be sure to give your car, truck or SUV a good wash to remove dirt and debris that has built up over the winter. Those in snowy regions should pay special attention to the undercarriage, where salt and sand can take its toll on metal parts.

Inside, clean out any winter-specific accessories you are carrying, and be sure to check and replenish your first-aid and roadside assistance kits. If you carry items like tire chains or bags of sand or kitty litter in the winter, it can be tempting to just leave them in the trunk or bed until next year, but don’t do it – all that extra weight will cost you money at the pump. According to, carrying just 100 extra pounds can reduce your mileage by up to two percent.

Pay special attention to your vehicle’s upholstery and carpet to ensure they are free of dirt, stains and salt residue, and make sure you use products safe for the specific type of cloth, microfiber, suede or leather you have. Your dealership can advise you about the appropriate cleaners, stain removers, etc., recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer, and most dealers offer detailing services to quickly and professionally get your vehicle looking great.

Now that winter is almost over, it’s also time to replace your snow tires with your warmer-weather rubber. While you’re at it, check both sets of tires to see if they are ready for another season. Make sure there is adequate tread depth, and look for uneven tread wear that could indicate a balancing or wheel alignment issue. Vibrations felt when driving, and pulling to one side or the other, are also signals that service is in order. Your brakes have probably been through a lot over the past few months, so having a factory-trained technician take a good look at all the components would be a good idea, too.

Next, check your belts and hoses; fluid levels; battery; air, oil and fuel filters; and plugs and wires. Test your air conditioning system to be sure it is blowing cold air, and inspect your wiper blades for winter damage. It’s also a good time to get an oil change.

Regardless of what service you need, stop by and have the factory-trained professionals who know your vehicle best do the right work, with the right parts, for a price that’s lower than you think.

Vehicle Profile: 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

The smarter crossover

Thanks to an impressive combination of performance, fuel economy, technology and capability, the Chevrolet Equinox is one of the best-selling crossovers in the industry. Thanks to some exterior enhancements, the 2014 Equinox is the best looking version Chevrolet has ever released and it’s on sale now here at Jack Maxton Chevrolet in Worthington, Ohio.

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox (MSRP $24,440) adds chrome-clad wheels to LTZ trims and offers new Red Rock Metallic and Silver Topaz Metallic exterior hues. Apart from those changes, the Equinox carries on with the popular combination of style and functionality that hundreds of thousands of drivers know and love.

Powering the five-passenger Equinox is an Ecotec 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. This direct injected engine produces 182 hp and 172 lb/ft of torque and comes paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. With an EPA-estimated 32 mpg highway, the Equinox is one of the most fuel efficient crossovers available. For even more power and towing capability, a 3.6-liter V6 is available. This 301-hp engine features 272 lb/ft of torque, and it will propel the Equinox to 60 mph from a dead stop in less than seven seconds. When properly equipped, the V6 Equinox can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Intelligent interior design is another reason the Equinox is such a hit with drivers.  The standard MultiFlex rear seat can slide nearly eight-inches forward and back. This allows for best-in-class legroom for second- or third-row passengers. That sliding seat also provides an even greater level of cargo versatility, creating a maximum of 31.4 cubic feet of space behind the second row. When the rear seat is folded, the Equinox can swallow 63.7 cubic feet of groceries, furniture or anything else you need to move.

The Equinox is also packed with many family-friendly features. A quick look around the interior reveals several storage cubbies, an oversized glove box, eight drink holders and four 12-volt outlets. Inside the center armrest is a closed storage area that is large enough to hold a laptop. Additional features include leather seating surfaces and a rear-seat dual DVD entertainment system. The available eight-speaker Pioneer Premium Audio System and Chevrolet MyLink radio offer a wide variety of entertainment options for those who don’t want to watch a DVD. To top it off, the Equinox features more interior headroom than the Ford Escape and the Toyota RAV4.

Getting you to your destination safely is Chevrolet’s number one priority. This is why the Equinox offers some of the most advanced safety features in the industry, like Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. The Equinox comes standard with StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, Rollover Mitigation and four-wheel antilock disc brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution. Should these systems not prevent a collision, passengers are protected by advanced airbags and can rely on the OnStar Automatic Crash Response system.

Kelley Blue Book editors said that if you “want a comfortable family/gear hauler that’s larger than other compact crossover SUVs but small enough to be at ease in parking lots, the Equinox is worth a look.”

Whether it’s the 32 mpg highway fuel economy, powerful and efficient powertrains or spacious and versatile cabin, the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox offers something for everyone. Come in and experience the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox today.
