As Edmunds.com put it, “Based on pricing and practicality, the four-door Chevrolet Spark is one of the best subcompact cars available for 2014.” That’s generous praise, and certainly well-earned by this four-passenger vehicle that stickers for a tick over $12,000 and also happens to be the winner of Kelley Blue Book’s “2014 5-year Cost to Own Award.” This Chevy is as affordable to drive as it is to buy.
The 2014 Spark offers a choice of trims, starting with the gasoline-powered LS, which is nicely equipped with 10 airbags; a four-speaker stereo; automatic headlamps; OnStar, including a complimentary six-month Directions and Connections subscription; 15-inch alloy wheels; power windows; and a two-year/24,000-mile factory-scheduled free maintenance plan.
For some extra amenities, check out the Spark 1LT, offered in gasoline and electric (EV) versions and home to the seven-inch touch-screen MyLink® hands-free infotainment system, SiriusXM® Satellite Radio Service, steering wheel Bluetooth controls, power mirrors, a USB port and more. Two Paths to Efficiency
As was the case last year, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark offers a 16-valve 1.2-liter ECOTEC® four-cylinder engine that features variable valve timing technology. Output of 84 hp and 83 lb/ft of torque remains unchanged; with the new Continuously Variable Transmission, the four-cylinder returns EPA-estimated fuel economy of 30 mpg city and 39 mpg highway (an increase over the previous automatic transmission). Drivers who stick with the standard 5-speed manual transmission gearbox can expect to see an EPA-estimated 31 mpg city and 39 mpg highway.
In keeping with the efficiency theme, engineers also developed the all-new 2014 Spark EV plug-in model, which is capable of traveling up to 82 miles between charges. Replacing the four-banger under the hood is 140-hp electric motor joined by a 120 kilowatt lithium-ion battery pack and regenerative brakes. The car can be recharged in less than 17 hours using a 120-volt household outlet, or in fewer than seven hours when plugged into a 240-volt charging station. Another option is the SAE Combo Fast Charging System, which gets the Spark EV to 80-percent charge in just 20 minutes.
