Vehicle Profile: 2015 Chevrolet Camaro

The epitome of affordable sportiness

davislibrary_pic_003037303The great-looking 2015 Chevrolet Camaro, on sale here at Jack Maxton Chevrolet in Worthington, Ohio, delivers performance in every trim. It offers a lot of choice, including standard V6 and V8 engines, standard coupe and convertible body styles, the track-focused Z/28 and the most powerful Camaro ever, the ZL1.

For 2015, the Camaro Coupe (MSRP from $23,705) offers 1LS, 2LS, 1LT, 2LT, 1SS and 2SS trims, while the Camaro Convertible (MSRP from $31,205) starts with 1LT and runs through 2SS.

The entry 2015 Camaro 1LS Coupe features crisp, athletic styling underscored by a big 323 hp from the standard 3.6-liter V6. In the 1LS, the direct-injected V6 also twists up 278 lb/ft of torque. In comparison, the standard 3.7-liter V6 in the Ford Mustang produces 300 hp, and the Mustang’s available 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder puts out 310 hp.

In the 2015 Camaro, power goes to the rear wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission. With an aggressive first gear ratio, the Aisin AY6 six-speed gets you going with authority. The standard limited-slip differential is a welcome surprise, too, especially since so many other automakers charge you extra for the traction enhancement it offers.

Other 1LS standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-outlet exhaust, Bluetooth wireless technology, steering-wheel controls for audio and cruise, sport suspension, variable-ratio power steering, and four-wheel disc brakes. The standard audio system features six speakers, Graphic Information Display (GID), auxiliary input jack and music navigator.

The Camaro 2LS carries a standard six-speed automatic transmission. It’s an engaging partner, with TAPshift manual control and Performance Algorithm Shifting to sense when you are making aggressive maneuvers and deliver the response to match your behind-the-wheel style. The automatic also features a steeper, 2.92 final drive ratio, versus the 3.27:1 axle in the 1LS. This is how you get a sports car that’s also capable of 30 mpg highway.

Next is the Camaro 1LT, which is outfitted with Sport cloth seats, projector-style foglamps, power-adjustable front seats and either the six-speed manual transmission or the six-speed automatic. Drivers also get the Chevrolet MyLink radio, which means an audio and communication center right in the dash that you control with a seven-inch color touch-screen. MyLink can integrate wirelessly with your Bluetooth-capable phone for hands-free calling and music streaming. You can also share your phone’s data connection to enable features like Pandora Internet Radio and Stitcher SmartRadio. MyLink is easy to use, too, and with both touch and voice-command operation, distractions are minimized.

The Camaro 2LT includes 19-inch Bright Silver painted aluminum wheels, leather seating, a color head-up display (HUD) for the driver, a quartet of auxiliary gauges, and a color Driver Information Center, which shows information like fuel economy, trip mileage and important messages about vehicle systems. A premium Boston Acoustics audio system enhances the entertainment when you’re not too busy wringing the car out.

The Camaro SS models are what you want when nothing but small-block V8 power will do. In the 2015 Camaro 1SS, a 6.2-liter small-block V8 with 426 hp and 420 lb/ft of torque resides behind the SS-specific fascia, ensuring that just about everyone else on the road is going to see a lot of the SS-specific rear fascia. You control all that power with a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission that can cope with the high torque, and the SS also features four-piston Brembo brakes. Every V8 Camaro with manual transmission also carries Launch Control, and the 1SS rolls on 20-inch wheels. In the cabin “SS” embroidery on the seats attests to your good fortune. A standard Sport Suspension gives the excellent chassis a further edge, so it can make the most of the extra performance. Other than the powertrain, equipment in the 1SS is similar to that of the 1LT.

The 2SS is a cushy V8 Camaro, with leather seats, color Driver Information Center, color Head-Up Display, auxiliary gauges, heated exterior mirrors, a premium Boston Acoustics audio system, plus a Rear Vision package.

The standard Camaro model range is just the beginning of the story. The iconic Camaro Z/28 is back, this time as a monster track car. The 2015 Camaro Z/28 takes it inspiration from the original 1967 Z/28, a car that was born for mixing it up in Trans/Am motorsports competition. This time around the Z/28 is better than ever, with a 7.0-liter LS7 V8 providing 505 hp and 481 lb/ft of torque. The V8 is paired with a Tremec TR6060 6-speed manual transmission with closely-spaced ratios, and there’s also a Torsen limited-slip differential.

Racing is what the Z/28 has on its mind, with a dry-sump oiling system, coolers for the oil, transmission and differential that can stand up to track use, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, 19-inch aluminum wheels wearing Pirelli Trofeo high-performance summer tires, and Multimatic DSSV dampers for ultimate control. The Z/28 is available exclusively as a coupe.

Not everyone wants a car so laser-focused on track-based perfection. For those drivers, there’s the ZL1, available in coupe or convertible form. Bringing back another iconic Camaro model designation, the 2015 Camaro ZL1 is the most powerful Camaro you can buy. Its supercharged 6.2-liter Gen IV small-block V8 is 580 hp and 556 lb/ft of torque strong, and it reels in 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Standard Magnetic Ride Control suspension and big Brembo brakes with six-piston front calipers keep things under control. Other standard features for the ZL1 include a Head-Up Display that can also show g-force, a premium nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system, Chevrolet MyLink, dual-mode performance exhaust and black 10-spoke forged aluminum wheels wearing high performance summer-only tires.

This is just the tip of the Camaro iceberg; you can be sure that Chevrolet offers options like navigation, stripe packages, upholstery choices, wheel options, and a selection of packages to let you tailor your Camaro to your individual tastes.

The 2015 Camaro delivers what it has always been known for – great style and exceptional performance. It’s backed up more than ever by the latest generation of sophisticated, powerful V6 and V8 engines that set the standard for the rest of the industry.
